Populism and Identity Politics in the U.S. Heartland

The rise of populism on the political right in U.S. and Europe recent decades reflects a significant shift culture. This has been associated with rejection mainstream politics increased hostility toward immigrants, racialized minorities, other marginalized groups who are seen as threats to economic security hegemonic social identities. In Heartland, several key states flipped from Democrat Republican 2016, sealing Trump’s win leading widespread debates about populist attitudes this region. analysis draws focus group discussions community leaders rural micropolitan Iowa understand how local discourses change intersects rising politics. Three characteristics life emerged areas concern among these groups; destabilization neoliberalism, changes composition, profound sense rurality. Our findings reveal identity movements integrated Heartland culture, contributing electoral success right-wing candidates. discussion concludes recommendations promote progressive inclusive agenda for whole.
